π§ Downbeat.fm Vol. 5 Track 3
Before we get started, this past weekend was International Transgender Day of Visibility. It is vitally important that we continue to support trans people as they are under constant attack. If you can, please donate to an organization like The Trevor Project, PFLAG, or The Human Rights Campaign that helps trans people find care, comfort, and acceptance. π³οΈββ§οΈ
Now, on to the music.
Last month, I wrote about how songs can transport you in time. While my wife and I were cooking, I had Chicago playing on the record player. When the song Saturday in the Park came on, I was transported to a place.
It's an iconic song, and I am transported to Yankee Stadium in The Bronx every time I hear it. Every time.
Between 1999 and 2001 my friends and I went to dozens of games every year. We would get tickets all over the Stadium - wherever we could afford that is, which was mostly in the bleachers, or the upper level.
And every Saturday, you knew Saturday in the Park by Chicago was going to play over the Stadium speakers between innings.
Every time I hear this song, no matter where in the world I am, I'm instantly transported to one of my favorite places on Earth, Yankee Stadium. I can see myself, sitting in the upper level on the third base side.
It's a warm, sunny summer day. I can feel the cool breeze. I can feel the warm sun on my face. I can smell the grass, smell the hot dogs, smell the beer. I can hear the crack of the bat, the ball hitting the back of a players mitt as they catch the ball, vendors calling out "Beer here! Get your ice cold beer here!".
Sadly, it's been 16 years since I've been to Yankee Stadium. It was one of the last few games at "old" Yankee Stadium before they moved into the new Stadium across the street. I don't watch baseball much anymore, but I need to get back to the ballpark one of these Saturdays.
What songs transport you to a place?

March 11th is 3/11 day, and NPR Tiny Desk Concerts celebrated with a Tiny Desk Concert performed by...311!
Speaking of NPR Tiny Desk Concerts, Soul Glow performed and inspired the first ever mosh pit at the Tiny Desk.
Asshole security guards and cops shut down Downbeat.fm featured punk band Joyce Manor show in Florida because of moshing and stage diving at a PUNK SHOW. Huge group of assholes (the security guards and cops, not the band). I can't wait to see Joyce Manor again in Austin this summer.
